Hello.
You’re watching Press Perspective for this Friday December 13th here in Seoul.
I’m Min Sunhee.
Today we explore Korea’s protest culture and its creative flair as well as the impact of the brief imposition of martial law on the country’s image.
For this I have Thomas Maresca American news agency UPI.
Thomas it’s good to have back.
I also have writer Colin Marshall with us.
Colin you’re becoming our regular Friday guest.
It’s great to see you again.
1) Thomas, the festive atmosphere of the public protests here continues to make international headlines, and you’ve been actively covering these displays of democracy, if you will.
Do fill us in.
2) Colin, what more can you tell us about the unique traits of public rallies here in Korea as compared to those elsewhere?
3) Thomas, there has been a tangible presence of young protesters at the latest rallies, casting doubt on earlier concerns that the youth in Korea are not interested in politics.
How do you care to explain this latest phenomenon based on what you’ve seen out on the streets?
4) Colin, some media outlets point out that the latest challenge to democracy in Korea is a tangible indication of the threat it currently faces worldwide.
What are your thoughts?
5) Thomas, an extensive report by Fox News links the latest events here in South Korea to the reality of an “imperial presidency” after which most leaders later face the consequences of their actions.
How do you respond?
6) Colin, British daily, the Guardian, carried an interesting article asserting that the recent challenge to democracy has displayed Korea’s two faces.
Do tell us a bit about this coverage, and do you believe Korea’s image has been hurt by this latest political fiasco?
7) Thomas, is this latest political turmoil harming Korea’s reputation or is it showing its resilience?
8) Colin, how should ordinary Koreans seek to find a path forward from the political strife?
9) Thomas, come tomorrow that is Saturday, the parliament votes again on an impeachment motion against the president.
What are your prospects?
