Hello and welcome.
You’re watching Press Perspective for this Friday November 29th here in Seoul.
I’m Min Sunhee.
Today we touch upon the growing presence of robots and foreign workers in domestic workplaces as Korea grapples with a shrinking workforce.
For more I have Colin Marshall a writer here in Korea.
Colin welcome back.
I also have Yang Chien-Hao a journalist also based here in the country.
Chien-Hao it’s good to have you back.
1) Chien-Hao, let’s begin with details of the coverage by British online newspaper, The Independent, about South Korea becoming the first worldwide to fill 10% of its workforce with robots.
2) Colin, how do you respond to anxiety about AI and robots replacing men in the workforce?
3) Chien-Hao, Korea, as reported by The Independent, has been investing billions into robotics in light of a shrinking workforce given its low birth rate.
What has the foreign media been saying about Korea’s labor market?
4) Colin, Korea brought in a record high of 165,000 non-professional migrant workers this year to ease the country’s labor shortage and plans are in the works to expand their presence in various industries.
What are your thoughts regarding these efforts?
5) Chien-Hao, Capital Seoul last month shared plans to hire foreigners as bus drivers on neighborhood routes.
Do you see a gradual expansion of work opportunities for foreigners in diverse fields here in Korea in the future?
6) Chien-Hao, Seoul’s welcoming of Filipino helpers this year also made quite a bit of foreign media headlines.
What was the focus of the coverage?
7) Colin, what do you believe makes Korea an appealing destination for foreign workers?
8) And Chien-Hao, amid plans to further expand the presence of foreign workers in Korea, concerns still remain about their treatment.
Do tell us more.
9) Colin, beyond borders, what can you share with us about the status of foreign workers in other countries that face similar labor troubles, starting perhaps with Germany and then Japan as well as Singapore?
10) Chien-Hao, back here in Korea, what can the government do to better accommodate its foreign workers?
All right.
That ends this week’s editions of Press Perspective
Thank you for watching.
Have a great weekend.
See you same time on Monday.
