A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea early Tuesday morning.
According to military sources here the soldier is a staff sergeant in his twenties who crossed the Military Demarcation Line in the northeastern county of Goseong in Gangwon-do Province on foot.
South Korea’s loudspeaker broadcasts cover this area which is also close to the site of fresh land mines planted by North Korean soldiers in recent times.
The North Korean soldier’s crossing was closely monitored by South Korean border authorities.
The latest defection comes less than a fortnight following that of a North Korean individual who crossed the maritime border on foot during low tide.
