DENMARK WELCOMES RETURN OF BULDAK NOODLES

13/08/2024

Welcome to Tuesday’s edition of Issues and Insiders for this August 13th here in Korea.
I’m Min Sunhee.
The Danish government’s earlier recall of Samyang’s Buldak Bokkeummyeon was reversed thanks to the efforts of the company itself as well as those of Seoul’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
For more I have Chang Youngzi Deputy Director of Global Policy and Strategy at the Ministry here in the studio.
Youngzi welcome.
I also have Kwon Soa with us.
Soa it’s good to have you here.

1) Soa, let’s begin with details about the recall of several Samyang instant noodle products by Denmark back in June.

2) Now, Youngzi, in response to the recall by Danish food authorities, I understand Seoul’s Food Ministry promptly dispatched a team of officials to Denmark.
Do tell us more about the Ministry’s decision and the team’s mission.

3) Youngzi, what was the negotiation process like between your team and its Danish counterpart in Copenhagen?

4) Soa, thanks to the effort of Seoul’s Food Ministry, Denmark reversed its recall about a month later, and the incident appears to have raised greater consumer interest in Samyang’s Buldak Bokkeummyeon ?

5) Meanwhile, Soa, on a concerning note.
I hear there has been a rise in reports of failure to meet certain overseas regulations by some K-food exports.
Please do explain this for us.

6) And Youngzi, what more can you add to this unfortunate reality , and how is Seoul’s Food Ministry working to better address it?

7) Also, Soa, for companies that are able to comply with the diverse regulations of different foreign markets, I understand the gains are tangible?

8) Youngzi, Korea’s pursuit of “sales diplomacy” needs the support of “regulatory diplomacy” as witnessed in the case of Samyang and Denmark.
Now for the sake of our viewers who may not be familiar with the strategy, do tell us a bit about “regulatory diplomacy” and its broader implications.

9) Moving forward, Soa, Denmark has just welcomed the return of Samyang’s ramyeon on supermarket shelves, right?

10) Youngzi, let’s end with a few words about the Ministry’s plans for this year .

All right.
